Fortress Brod. Traces of rich history.
The Fortres Brod History
In Brod, one of the important strategic and traffic sites controlled by the border crossing towards Turkey and connected the main trade routes, Austria in the time of 1715-1780. He builds a large imperial and royal Slavonian border fortress Brod on the Savi River, which, together with the established Slavonian Baroque cities of Osijek and Stari Gradiška, belongs to the large defense system on the border towards the Turkish Empire, which in the first half of the 18th century was designed by Prince Eugen Savoy. Forced work was built by the peasants of the Border Guards, 634 a day and gave 53 horsepower on the day to transport materials. The fortress of a regular star -shaped star that dictated the plain terrain was built with earthen charges, bricks, wood and partial stone, and was scheduled for accommodation of 4,000 soldiers, mostly pedestrians and 150 cannons. According to one assessment of the durability of the ship’s fortress, in the case of a classic siege and fully filled channels, it would take ten days of preparation for the attack and 46 days to occupy the whole fort. The ship’s fort took about 33 ha. As military authorities did not allow the construction of a solid material houses, because the whole city was within the range of fortress cannons, the ship throughout the 18th and most of the 19th century was a city of small wooden houses covered with shingles or boards. In the case of a Turkish attack, the city was to be demolished that the artillery had a free wiped space around the fort. Although as a military fort on the border of the fortress, it was almost never able to prove and confirm its combat power, on the past time of everyday military life that took place in it, numerous preserved fortification facilities were reminded. The Brod Fortress is built according to the Vauban system. It is basically a square shape, and the system of defensive guys gives it an asterical floor plan. She had three defensive belts: the inner, external and south, and was protected by two branches of the branches, into which the water was brought from a nearby stream. The southern side of the fortress is especially strengthened by a determination called Hornwerk because it resembles horns in the floor plan (German Horn – Rog). The primary task of Hornwerk is to prevent the Turks through the Sava Tourist, but within the southern defense belt, by the end of the 18th century, several buildings were built such as the building of the Fortress Commander, where today the headquarters of the Music School, the officer’s pavilion, where the City Administration, apartment of the fortress today is located today Chaplain (where today is the cafe bar chaplain’s apartment), commander’s kitchen, collar and barn, while free spaces were used for orchards, gardens and parks. The internal, central part of the fort, is square in shape, and is made up of four basions associated with ramparts. Basioni-peterocutic fortifications made of earthen charges, and on the outside, bricking on the outside, organized for the last resistance from the enemy and on them could control the space in front of the fort, defend the outer ramparts and the neighboring bastion. For the purpose of defense, in addition to 46 cm high cannons for cannons, there were also 4 watchdogs. Between every two basions are the courtesy – the main ramparts. They are bricking and on the upper side is an earthen out of the defensive path. Inside, Kurtina are spaces for the accommodation of people and ammunition and workshops necessary for the functioning of the fort and in the middle of the passage. In the renovated blacksmith, located in the western Kurtina, visitors to the fort today welcome the costumed blacksmith.
